Action-adventure games are among the
most widely played online games on the Internet. Action-adventure, in short, is
a fast-paced video game category that combines elements from both the
traditional adventure game genre and the action game genre. There are many
different types of action-adventure games, all of which share common aspects.
The first and most obvious is the
adventure game, which is basically a puzzle game where you try to solve a
series of obstacles, usually through use of tools and/or characters. Usually,
the player has at least a few options in how he or she wishes to accomplish his
or her objectives. Some examples of adventure games include "Sorcerer's
Apprentice" (which includes puzzles and actions as well as an actual
story), "Babel" (also called the Game of the Year award winner), and
"Tron". In order to achieve success, the player must choose from a
wide variety of different skills and abilities, as well as equip himself or
herself with the correct weapons and gadgets.
Action-adventures are also famous
for their action sequences. Often these sequences involve a plot-line that is
somewhat complex and has a significant amount of character development. The
goal of an action-adventure game is generally to save the main character, often
through combat. Some examples of action-adventures include "The Legend of
Zelda", "Babel", "Tron", "Sorcerer's
Apprentice", "The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link", and
"Wii Fit". In order to achieve success, the player must battle
numerous enemies using the appropriate weapons, as well as acquire the right
amount of experience points to increase his or her level up.
The adventure game, however, has
evolved greatly over time. In the past, adventure games tended to have very
short, simple plots. Today's adventure games, however, usually have complex
plots with multiple and interrelated levels. These games are often based on
themes such as science fiction, mythology, fantasy, horror, and even mythology
itself.
In addition, many games now feature
a number of interactive features such as objects or characters that can be
found throughout the game world. These features allow the players to interact
with the game, giving them the opportunity to either create new characters or to
use items that the developers themselves created. Additionally, many
adventure-games offer various forms of "treasure chests" where the
player can collect new items and other items to use in order to progress
through the game.
Most of the popular online games in
this genre, such as "The Legend of Zelda", "The Legend of Zelda:
Link's Awakening", "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time", and
"Babel", have been programmed by Japanese developers. This may be
because the majority of Japanese companies are now focusing on developing
action-adventures. The same goes for adventure games such as "Tron"
(created by Eidos Interactive) and "Tron: Evolution", as well as
"Wii Fit".
